UNCE Offers Green Industry Training
Eight classes explore topics important to landscapers, nursery workers
University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) will offer its Green Industry Training Program in February, with eight entry-level classes on topics important to the green industry.
Heidi Kratsch, UNCE horticulture specialist, said attendees will gain information on a wide range of topics pertinent to the landscaping and nursery industry.
“The classes focus on some of the basic information that workers in the green industry need to know,” Kratsch said. “Such as learning about growing plants, managing pests, using pesticides safely and about some of the diseases and other types of problems plants can develop as they are growing in landscapes.”
The program targets entry-level green industry workers and people striving to get jobs in the green industry.
“The program provides them with the education and a certification that gives them credibility to potential employers,” Kratsch said.
The classes are from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 5 to Feb. 28. Individual classes cost $15 per class, or participants can enroll in the entire course for $80. Classes will be taught by UNCE horticulture faculty, staff and local industry professionals, and will be held at the UNCE office at 4955 Energy Way in Reno.
Kratsch said attendees will gain knowledge that will benefit them in the green industry.
“They will take away an appreciation for how to manage plants efficiently and safely,” Kratsch said. “They will also earn continuing education credits by taking these classes to help maintain their licenses and certifications. There aren’t a lot of educational opportunities, and this allows UNCE to provide low-cost, high-quality information to those who are interested.”
Registration fees for full-course participants include a copy of the book “Water-Efficient Landscaping in the Intermountain West.” Certificates of attendance, refreshments and International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and Pesticide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are offered for both full-course and individual class participants. Course fees also support Green Industry Continuing Education Series classes.
Discounts are also available to organizations enrolling multiple employees. Contact Kratsch to receive the reduced rate.
To register, class registration forms must be mailed to Ashley Andrews (UNCE, 4955 Energy Way, Reno, NV 89502) by Jan. 29, 2013.
