Our very own Heidi Kratsch, UNCE’s Western Area Horticulture Specialist, was chosen by the Nevada Landscape Association (NLA) to receive their 2012 Education/Research Award!
The NLA, a local membership organization for landscape and nursery professionals, honors one association member per year with this award. The honoree must contribute to the education of, and conduct research that benefits, Nevada’s green industry to qualify for this award.
Heidi, a member of NLA’s board of directors, received this award in recognition of her Green Industry Training and Continuing Education Series programs and for her research into bioplastic pots. Heidi also works to educate Nevada’s green industry about the use of native Nevada plants in landscapes.
Many UNCE Master Gardener Volunteers are familiar with Heidi’s green industry programs. For example, Master Gardeners Ron S. and Kathi L. have been working hard alongside Heidi to label, plant, harvest, dry and weigh bioplastic pot samples to determine how well they break down in Nevada’s soils.
The Master Gardener Native Plants Club supports Heidi as she educates the green industry about the use of Nevada’s native plants in landscapes through native seed collection and propagation, the Native Plants Demonstration Garden, and through collecting research and data for use in UNCE native plant fact sheets.
Heidi is very pleased to receive the NLA’s Education/Research Award as it indicates that the green industry appreciates and benefits from the UNCE programs that are designed to support them.
“To me this award is validation from this group as an Extension professional that I am meeting their needs,” Kratsch said. “It says that I am providing them with the researched-based information they need and links to other sources of information that is valuable.”Click photos for a larger view.
